NEET 2027 age limit and attempt limit: what the rule is today, what a panel proposed, and what is not decided

The Radhakrishnan panel, October 2024. The high-level committee constituted after the 2024 leak, chaired by former ISRO chairman K. Radhakrishnan, submitted 101 recommendations to the Education Ministry. Among them, reported on 1 November 2024: that NEET (UG) could be held more than once like JEE, that a hybrid mode could deliver papers digitally with answers on OMR, and that the number of attempts, "currently unlimited", could be restricted. The report gives no number. It recommends; it does not enact. The Centre has told the Supreme Court it would implement the panel's measures, and several have since been carried out in phases, but restricting attempts is not among the ones that have been notified.

NTA to a parliamentary committee, 22 May 2026. Reported on 23 May 2026: NTA told the Parliamentary Standing Committee that an upper age limit and an attempt cap were "under consideration as part of the next phase of reforms". Under consideration, next phase. The same reports were careful that the 2026 rules stayed in force for the 2026 re-examination and that a change was not expected in time for 2027.

That is the whole paper trail. There is no NTA public notice, no bulletin amendment, no NMC gazette that sets an upper age or an attempt count for NEET 2027.

What it would take for either to become a rule

A change to eligibility is not something NTA can announce on a Tuesday. It sits in the NMC's Graduate Medical Education Regulations, which is why the 2022 removal came from the NMC and NTA merely amended its bulletin to match. To restore an upper age limit, or to introduce an attempt cap, the sequence is: an NMC regulation or amendment, then NTA's bulletin for that year carrying the new clause. Both are public documents. The bulletin for NEET 2027 is expected with the registration notice in early 2027, and if a new eligibility clause exists it will be printed in it, in the same section that has said "no upper age limit" for four years.

Until that bulletin exists, the position for planning is the position today.

What to do with this, by who you are

A Class 12 student sitting NEET 2027. Nothing here touches you. Confirm your date of birth is on or before 31 December 2010 and move on to the syllabus.

A first-year dropper. Nothing here touches you either, and the "attempt cap" reports are the ones most likely to be waved at you. If a cap were introduced with the 2027 bulletin it would be published months before the exam, with its counting rule spelled out; nobody's attempt has ever been retroactively disqualified by an eligibility change. Put the time into the dropper plan instead.

A second- or third-year dropper, or an older candidate. You are the group a future upper limit or attempt cap would actually affect, and you are also the group with the least reason to wait. Every extra year of preparation is an extra year in which a rule can change under you. The practical reading of "under consideration for a later phase" is: 2027 is the year the current rule is most certain to still hold.

What is the age limit for NEET 2027?

Minimum 17 years on or before 31 December 2027, so a date of birth on or before 31 December 2010. There is no upper age limit; the NMC removed it in March 2022 and no NEET bulletin since has carried one.

Is there an upper age limit for NEET 2027?

No, as the rules stand on 10 September 2026. NTA told a parliamentary committee in May 2026 that an upper limit was under consideration for a later phase of reforms; that is a proposal, not a rule, and it would have to appear in the NMC regulations and the 2027 bulletin before it applied.

How many attempts are allowed in NEET 2027?

Unlimited. There is no attempt count on the form and no rule capping attempts. The Radhakrishnan panel recommended in October 2024 that attempts could be restricted, without a number, and NTA said in May 2026 a cap was under consideration. Neither has been notified.

Is the NEET attempt limit different for OBC, SC or ST candidates?

No. There is no attempt limit for any category. The old upper age limit was category-specific (25 general, 30 reserved) and that is where the memory of a category rule comes from; it was removed for everyone in 2022.

Can a dropper give NEET 2027 after three previous attempts?

Yes. Nothing in the current rules counts previous attempts. If a cap is ever introduced it will be published in an NTA bulletin with its counting rule before the registration window opens, not applied to attempts already made.

Who decides NEET eligibility, NTA or NMC?

The NMC, through its Graduate Medical Education Regulations. NTA prints those rules in the NEET (UG) information bulletin and conducts the exam. That is why the 2022 removal of the upper age limit came from the NMC and NTA amended its bulletin to match.
