Dated 10 September 2026. Type "NEET 2027 new rules" and you get a hundred pages, most of them rewriting each other and none of them dated. This one sorts every claim currently circulating into three piles: confirmed (there is a document and a date), proposed (a real body said it, in a real document, and it has not been decided), and rumour (nothing behind it). Then it tells you what, if anything, each pile changes about your preparation.
Confirmed: things with a date and a document
Computer-based test. On 15 May 2026 the Union Education Minister announced that NEET (UG) moves to a computer-based test from 2027, in roughly 20 shifts with score normalisation across shifts. On 4 September 2026 NTA wrote to AICTE asking it to identify government institutions with the IT infrastructure and space to serve as testing centres for NEET (UG) 2027, and officials said CBT centres "cannot be outsourced to small private players". That is the mode moving from announcement to logistics. What is still not published: shift timings, the number of test cities, and the normalisation formula. The syllabus. Unchanged since the 2024 rationalisation, which NTA kept for 2025 and 2026. No topic has been added back. The deleted concepts, checked against real questions, are in What NTA deleted from the NEET syllabus.
The paper and the marking. 180 questions, 720 marks, +4 and −1, 180 minutes, all questions compulsory since 2025 removed the optional-question section. Every NTA pattern document since 2019 has kept this shape, and the 2026 paper did too. Normalisation across shifts changes how your score is compared; it does not change how a question is marked.
Eligibility. 17 by 31 December 2027, no upper age limit, no attempt cap. The proposals to change this are real and are in the next pile; the rule is in NEET 2027 age limit and attempt limit.
Proposed: a real body said it, nobody has decided it
These three are the source of most of the noise, and each has a paper trail worth knowing exactly.
A two-stage NEET, like JEE. The Radhakrishnan committee, reporting after the 2024 leak, recommended that NEET (UG) "can also be conducted more than once" like JEE, and described multi-stage testing as "a viable possibility that needs to be followed up". On 5 August 2026 the Centre told the Supreme Court it was "actively examining significant reforms" to NEET (UG), "including the possibility of introducing a two-stage examination pattern similar to the JEE". Actively examining. Possibility. No timeline was given, and NTA's own actions for 2027, the CBT centre search above, are for a single computer-based exam. Kya NEET 2027 two phase mein hoga? Not as things stand: it is under examination for a future cycle, and a change of that size would need its own bulletin months ahead.
An attempt cap and an upper age limit. The same panel suggested restricting attempts, "currently unlimited", without a number. NTA told a Parliamentary Standing Committee on 22 May 2026 that both were under consideration "as part of the next phase of reforms". A change to eligibility sits in the NMC's regulations, not in NTA's gift, and would have to be printed in the 2027 bulletin to apply. It has not been.
NEET twice a year. This one is old: NTA wrote to the Health Ministry as far back as 2020 proposing NEET twice a year, and the idea resurfaced with the panel's "more than once" line. Nothing has been notified. For 2027 there is one exam, on one date, still to be announced.
Rumour: no document, no date
"NEET 2027 will have a new syllabus." No. The NMC's rationalised syllabus stands; every "new syllabus 2027 PDF" being sold is the 2024 document with a new cover. Where the official one is.
"NEET 2027 will be hybrid, OMR answers with digital papers." The panel did recommend a hybrid mode as an option in 2024. The 2026 decision went the other way, to full CBT, and the September 2026 centre search is for computer terminals, not OMR rooms. Treat hybrid as superseded.
"The exam date is fixed for 2 May 2027." Not announced. It is a planning estimate: NEET (UG) has been held on the first Sunday of May since 2019, and 2 May 2027 is that Sunday. This site uses it and says so each time. A page that presents it as NTA's date is guessing.
"Registration opens in January." Not announced. The last three cycles opened in February or March. The form timeline.
"Board marks will count." No proposal, no document. The only thing that counts is the NEET score, normalised across shifts.
What each pile changes about your preparation
The confirmed pile changes three things, and all three are already in your control: practise on a screen with a palette and a timer, because that is the exam; strike the deleted topics out of your book; and stop hoping a "hard shift" sinks everyone, because normalisation exists precisely to adjust for it.
The proposed pile changes nothing. Not because it cannot happen, but because if it does it will be announced in a bulletin with its own dates, its own counting rules and months of notice. A two-stage exam does not arrive as a surprise; a stage-one paper needs a stage-one date. Preparing as if it might is preparing for a paper that does not exist yet, at the expense of the one that does.
The rumour pile costs you exactly the time you spend on it.
The single most useful habit is a cheap one: check the NTA site once a fortnight and read this site's dated log on the days between. Anything that is not on the log has not happened.
