Every NEET aspirant reaches the same conclusion by December: Botany feels manageable, Physics feels like a different exam. Coaching folklore chalks this up to "aptitude" — some people are just Physics people. They aren't. The gap is designed into the paper, and it's measurable.
The paper is not equally hard across subjects
Every question in nextAIR's bank carries a difficulty label — easy, medium or hard — the same tagging that drives our adaptive practice engine and predicted mocks. Aggregated into a target mix per subject, across 45 questions, the pattern is stark:
- Botany — 55% easy · 40% medium · 5% hard
- Zoology — 50% easy · 42% medium · 8% hard
- Chemistry — 45% easy · 40% medium · 15% hard
- Physics — 35% easy · 45% medium · 20% hard
Read the Physics/Botany gap again: Physics carries four times the hard-question share of Botany, and Botany carries 55% easy questions to Physics's 35%. You are not imagining the difference — it's built into how NTA assembles the paper, and, following that same real distribution, how our predicted mocks assemble theirs.
It's not just difficulty — it's what kind of question
Difficulty alone undersells the gap. The question type shifts just as sharply across subjects:
- Physics is numerical-first. 27 of 45 questions — 60% — are calculation-based. A wrong formula or a sign error costs the mark even when you understood the concept perfectly.
- Chemistry splits three ways — 19 theory, 11 numerical, 7 match-the-column, 7 correct-incorrect statements — so no single skill, memorising or calculating, carries the subject alone.
- Botany is almost entirely recall. 23 theory questions plus 8 match-the-column and 7 statement-based — barely 2 numerical questions in the whole subject. This is why direct NCERT reading converts to marks faster in Botany than anywhere else in the paper.
- Zoology leans on statements. 16 statement-based questions — assertions you judge true or false, or rank — more than any other subject carries.
What this means for how you should be practising
Three consequences most study plans ignore:
Treat Physics practice time as calculation drilling, not concept review. If your Physics revision is re-reading notes, you're practising the 40% of the subject that isn't costing you marks. A 60% numerical share means timed problem-solving — not familiarity — is what the subject actually tests.
Don't mistake a high Botany score for mastery. Botany's 55% easy share means a high score there is partly the paper being generous, not proof every weak concept is gone. Bank marks fast in Botany, but don't let its headroom hide chapters you're actually shaky on.
Match your mock-review to the question type, not just the topic. A wrong Physics numerical and a wrong Physics theory question point to different fixes — one's a calculation-process problem, the other's a concept gap. Reviewing both the same way wastes the diagnostic value of the mistake.
